Short Reed Goose Calls

Recommended Posts

Foiles makes a good call but there are a lot of other awesome short reeds on the market. My favorites are Ganser Freestyle, Bill Saunders (especially the "traffic") Heartland calls and finally Winglock calls. I would recommend testing different calls at your local dealers just to get a feel for how they blow. Even 2 calls the same make and model can sound/blow completely different, its all in the tune. Of all the calls I listed I'd really check out Freestyle. Corey is awesome on a call and a good hunter as well.

ganser freestyle calls are good calls. and ill say why you should stay away from them. ganser is pompus and arrogant (plus a few other words but im going to church it up a bit). i am good friends with one of the guys that work for him and have also helped out on a few of his "guided" hunts. i have watched him leave in the middle of hunts where guys pay $100 each to come out and hunt with him, even with guys he grew up with. he put paying customers in a bad field hoping birds will fly over just so he can save the good field for a video shoot a few days later. on one guide trip, he didn't even show up. said he didn't feel good, which knowing a little bit about him made me believe he was hung over. i asked him to tune up one of his calls i purchased and was blown off, so i did it myself. took a long time, but now i know how to do it.

the guys working for him are good guys though. there are 3 that i know and its a shame their talents are wasted working for this guy...........loc9

Everyone is going to have their opinions on this one but nobody will be right except me laugh.gif

Go with a Tim Grounds Pro Super Mag. I promise you a Foiles call sounds like a party horn compared to that. Plus, Tim is as nice as they come and I'm sure if you emailed him, he would give YOU a phone call and help you decide. Great guy!

There really are a lot of nice calls out there...

I have blown alot of different calls. I mainly stick with Heartland StageFright, Tim Grounds SuperMag, Zinks PM-1 and LM-1. Wouldnt mind picking up a GK as well. Tried buyin a Ganser a while back before I knew him. Glad I didnt. I know some of the guys that work(ed) for him as well, most are good guys. Spend your money on a Grounds, Zink, Heartland. Nothing but first class service from those guys.

Itsakeeper, Go and give a bunch a them a try! Not everyone can blow a foiles, grounds, winglock, GK, etc. Different strokes for different folks as they say!!

Matt, I think everyone that responded to this post is right except you!!IMO Not everyone can blow a Grounds call! I am not here to start an argument, just stating the facts!

Hey Matt,

I figured so! I do have to say that the Supermag that I got at the M.W.A. banquet on Thursday night is one SWEET call! That is the first grounds call that I ever owned! Its fast, and sounds like there is a flock of geese in that thing! WOW!! grin.gif I really like it! My foiles call might just be for sale now!! I will have to wait and see!

Itsakeeper,

If you want to try out a bunch of calls go down to Midwest Western and Waterfowl in St. Paul. There selection was awesome this last fall!

I couldn't agree more about Tim Grounds and his calls. I bought one (long mag coca bola) 2 years ago, then 3 more last year, different kinds. I have been able to use all of them with success and Tim has been a very big part of that. Buy one and if you have trouble, call or email him and he will work you through it right there on the phone. Plus he backs all his calls. He is a great guy and I wouldn't buy a call from any one else. Also if you want a great instructional video, Shawn Stahl has a really good one where he teaches you everything and does a great job of it. It's the perfect video for a guy just starting out or a guy just tuning his skill.
