Jiffy 34 ST Auger

LIVE2FISH

Question

I bought a new Jiffy Stealth 9" auger this winter and have not been happy with the performance. The auger will not drill unless I hold up on the auger. It really graps because of the agressive blade system which is great; but it just does not seem to have enough power to turn the auger.I took it in to a certified repair place and they think it is the clutch.[i do not think they are right]I called Jiffy today and talked to a service tech and we discussed the high and low speed carb settings.I have the high speed screw at one and one eighth turns open which is where it seems to run the best under load.I took the two small ripper blades off and it now will drill holes with out bogging down;but it is suppose to run with them on!I plan on calling Jiffy again tomorrow.I was wondering if any one with this auger had any comments. All ideas welcomed.

Sure sounds like a carb than needs a little tweeking. There is the sweet spot on the carb you just need to find it. It is not uncommon for the carbs to need to be tweeked some when you first get them. I have a 10" Stealth and it is great.

I totally agree that it seems to be a carb proplem.I have tried both up and down with the high speed settings.I am going to see if they will send me a new carb.I was just following the proceeder for service work so it would be covered under the warranty.Sad thing is I don't think the place I took it to knows enough.I have a good repoir going with Jiffy's service guy it seems so I think I will get the problem solved.I had a model 30 Jiffy that was 22 years old and it was an excellant auger. That is why I was so dissapointed with my new one.Glad to here your augers work good.

Trick is to make your high speed adjustment while the auger is under load. This really takes two guys. I would back the screw out a another full turn after the auger is warmed up then have an assistant very slowly turn the screw in till you hit the sweet spot while your drilling. You'll hear the RPMs build and you want to be turned in just till you hit that peak and no more. Thats fine for an auger but something like a snowmachine you'd back the high speed back out a hair after hitting that point. Its probably going mean drilling several or more holes to get the carb tweaked.
