ICEMASTER1940
I hope this old dog can learn new tricks. After ice fishing for several decades without electronics or a tent, I purchased both and wondered how I ever got along without them. I don't have a GPS but have decided to get one. You guys helped me decide which brand of fish finder to buy and I would like your opinion(s) on which brand, or model of GPS would work best on the ice in Colorado. From what I have read I am leaning towards the Lowrance iFinder H2O. Having never used any type of GPS before this paticular model sounds like a good fit for me from both a cost and function stand point. Opinions please. <'((<
Dan DAN the fisherman
That should work for you old man! As long as you have a computer to download and save your way points. I've collected hundreds of way points over the years and have them all divided up into different regions and lakes. They are an excellent tool for fishing and hunting. Good luck with your purchase and good luck fishing. Dan
Don In Denver
I got the iFinder H20 for Christmas and I love it! Get the Map Create software from Lowrance, too!
CAJ
Have you ever used the GPS while up in the Mountains hunting? I want to get a GPS, and wonder if they will always be able to conect with enough satilites at one time to be very accurate. If so, what kind is the most all around unit to buy for huntting and fishing. CAJ
Guest
Bought the H2O this winter and i usually have a hard time with these toys. Have to say that the unit is pretty user friendly and overall very happy with it. Now i just need to figure out which maps to buy and learn again. Its nice when you can mark a rock pile or spots on the lake and drive right back to it. ScoutII
Navionics has a great selection of mapped lakes. Depending on your budget, and needs I think you can find what you are looking for. I have purchased the Hot Maps Prem-N card. It is a $200.00 card, but with 3,000 lakes on the card for the MN., IA., WI., and MI., areas. There are 11 lakes in 1' contours and many in 3' contours, with the rest in 5' contours. Works great in the H2O. Go to the Navionics HSOforum or to your nearest larger sporting goods store. ICEMASTER1940
Thank you all for your input. I ordered, online today, the iFinder H2O and the MapCreate USA Topo Accessories Pack. I don't know squate about how to get everything to work, but I'm looking forward to learning. If I have any technical questions I'm sure this forum will be the first place that I start looking for answers, or, I'll track Dan Dan down on the ice somewhere (no pun intended) and let him show this old man how and where to start. <'((<
Dan DAN the fisherman
Hey Ice, Hows that new toy working for you? I've been wondering if you've been wandering in circles somewhere. Haven't heard from you in a while. If your lost, send up flares or smoke signals and I'll come track you down!!!!!! Dan
ICEMASTER1940
Hi Dan. I was thinking about you today. My wife and I were fishing Granby and saw, at a pretty good distance, someone riding a motorbike/cycle ( not a Harley ) thing out on the ice. Who ever it was, wasn't fishing. They just seemed to be out riding around talking to different groups of fishermen. I told her that Dan used a similar mode of transportation. Had I been in possesion of my GPS today I wouldn't have used it. 20 holes, 5 different spots, 8 strikes, 3 fish, great weather. Back to the GPS. I didn't fill out the on-line form properly the first time, and had to reorder last Monday. Hopefully I filled out the form correctly and will receive it yet this ice season. If not, I will use it to track down those elusive "keeper" Walleye at Chatfield. How is the Fork fishing? Have you ever fished for Northerns with a Chubby Darter and Sucker meat? I have caught several Mac's in Granby with that combination and thought that it might work for Northerns. When I become a pro at CATCHING Trout, Mac's, Walleye and Crappie I think I will start fishing for Northerns. I have caught several Northerns at the Fork but was throwing Kastmasters for Trout at the time. Sir Fish Alot caught a big Nothern through the ice at Williams Fork 5 or 6 years ago using a White Twister Tail and Sucker meat but was fishing for Mac's, not Northerns. <'((<
Dan DAN the fisherman
I've caught 1 really nice pike through the ice at the fork, about 5 years ago , when the water was still up. She was 44" and I'm guessing about 28#. I've caught them off shore when the water was up also, in the 36" to 42" range, and of course smaller. Since the water has been down, I've been striking out. Can't seem to get a low water patern going at all. The fork was a little slow last weekend. Only caught 8(macs} all day. Good luck fishing to you and your wife. I wish I could get my wife on the ice!
