Anybody using a casting rod for vertical jigging?

get-the-net

Question

I know there's still lots o ice on the lakes still, but it's never to early to start thinking about the open water season. I run a tiller, and am looking for a vertical jigging outfit to use when backtrolling for walleyes. I cast with my left and reel with my right, and I've tried but can't get the hang of a left handed spinning reel. I figured that a baitcaster would be easier to switch hands when I hook a fish. If only they made right handed tillers! Anyone have advice on which baitcasting rods/reels would be appropriate for backtrolling/jigging?

Thanks

I use my bait casters all the time for vertical jigging and back trolling. I have the flipping button turned on so I can let out small amounts of line as needed with just a push of the thumb bar. That’s a lot easier than opening the bail or pulling line off with the drag. As far as what rod to use, just get the same action and length that you normally use with a spinning reel and you should be good to go. I run a tiller too so I know what you are talking about with the right hand left hand thing.
