ironman
I've always wanted a German Shorthair, I love the way the look and the way they work. However...last fall, after not duck hunting since high school over ten years ago, I got obsessed. Now I'm not sure of the breed I want. Here's my questions:Would I be able to get away with using a shorthair for duck retrieves? Would the cold water be a problem? What if I use a neoprene vest for the dog? Does anyone else use their Shorthair for duck hunting? Please help. Thanks.

gspman
If you are serious about cold weather duckin' you may want to reconsider a shorthair. A shorthair wouldn't normally have enough body fat and a dense enough coat with an undercoat to take true cold weather duck shooting for extended periods of time. A neoprene vest would help some but you might need to take other steps to keep a shorthair warm enough. A wirehair or griffon would be worth looking at as well. Another option is get a lab and a shorthair.
