gopherfish
I had a post earlier this week about a tip up question. Some of you suggested that I rig up an offshore clip to the tip up. Where do you get these clips at? Are they similar to what is used on downriggers?
Moose-Hunter
Hi Gopherfish...These clips can be purchased at many of the larger retail outlets that carry trout/salmon/walleye gear. They are almost the exact same deal as what I use on my riggers. For use with a tip-up, I'd look for a clip (release) with a very light jaw tension. Enough to keep a large bait attached, but light enough to give those soft biters a free line. Most releases used for downrigging may be a bit too tight for your application. However, releases, with a much lighter tension are used for planer board walleye presentations. Such as when pulling live bait rigs. These are not only physically smaller in size, but tend to have that light jaw tension you're looking for. I also use clips for trolling weights. These clips are so stout, you almost need a vise to open them. Probably not a good choice for tip-ups. Then there are some that have an adjustable tension... I have used these, BUT... I have yet to find any that actually hold their adjusted tension when trolling. It may be a different story for under a tip up.
