Sunflower heater with burst of flame

Woods&Water

Question

I have an older Mr. Heater sunflower heater and new 5# tank. Everytime I use the sunflower, it works fine for just a while then it starts to spit out extra flames above the cage. Could the tank have a bad valve? or could the tank have been purged wrong?

Is the air mixture hole plugged with a moth or spider web?

If the orifice is plugged it'll burn cold with a flame too.

The orifice is located where the air mixture hole is, you'll have to remove the tube to get at the orifice to clean it. Use a very thin wire.

After the initial purge/fill, it sometimes takes a few more fills to completely purge a tank. My 11 pounder took two or three trys before it settled down. If your 5 pounder is THAT new, it may be something to look into as well as the cleaning for your heater.
