Deer Hunting Boots

JohnnyC: I like your thinking. Maybe somebody should start a thread with different types of natural (home things) for scent covers, attractants etc. I get the biggest laugh when I brows at the gadget (hunting) shops. It is unbelievable what people will buy.

Okay, back at this. Being a tightwad is fine, but remember, if you're out for a big buck complete dedication and certainty of your gear is part of it.

I really like to stress clean boots to my fellow hunters. There's one article of clothing in contact with the deer world at all time when afield and that's your boots. That's why I don't walk on trails and I always wear clean boots.

My boot of choice (except when really warm) is the Lacrosse Ice Kings. Rubber bottoms, wool liners, and very warm. I just saw them on sale for $60 this weekend at the man's mall.

If you want to keep using one of your pairs I would say start by leaving them outside. Alot of the scent will eventually diffuse out. Wash the liners in baking soda if they have liners and maybe wash down the rest with baking soda. Like I mentioned before however, just because we can't smell anything doesn't mean a buck can't.

I will agree with bigbucks that a younger 5 pointer and a 8pts and up buck are two different things. I could go on and on about forks, 6's, spikes that milled around aimlessly almost looking to get shot. I've probably had almost just as many bruisers skirt the shadows on me.

As for cover scent, I don't use it. Here's my take and just take it with a grain of salt, but hear me out. Think of it this way...when you step in your house after a long day of work you know the smell of your house, it's unique and recognizable. Well now pretend you walk in and the little lady has a hotdish going in the oven. Now you really smell a stong odor of one of the things that is 'normal' in your house. Okay, in either case, if you step in the kitchen and 3 days ago the wife had decided to pitch some chicken trimmings in the garbage you will smell them above all the other 'good' and 'normal' smells in your house and I guarantee you won't like it.

Now picture a big buck strolling on his turf. Everything smells normal. Then he smells something normal...but potently normal. Fine, maybe he didn't spook. But, if he still smells you...you just became the chicken trimmings.

You see, cover scent does not eliminate your smell. It simply gives a stronger 'normal' odor out hoping to mask off your scent. I would rather spend my planning on making sure I'm as clean as I can be and play the wind to make sure I see big deer. So many guys don't realize how many deer they could see if they kept clean. Meaning, half the time you'll never know if a buck busted you because if you smell, he'll go around you before you even see him.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
