It takes a little more then fishing next to the crowds. You need a map and need to understand where the deep and shallow water is at. Any joe can fish next to the crowd, the real fisherman will be away in his own spot catching fish. Sometimes the crowd is the place to go but you will never find me near the crowd. If i was you i would fish the south lake, i did real well out there on friday and saturday in 21 foot of water. Look around and find a good spot, it does not have to be in the crowd.

OK, I'll try this again, my post didn't sound good confused.gif

The crowds usually tell you where the fishing has been good. However, I don't fish in crowds, but know where they are fishing and where I can find some structure or water with the same characteristics somewhere else. I think with big crowds, the fish scatter more and away from the crowds.

If the weather cooperates, I like the fish the refuge area. Not much traffic there once driving on the ice is possible!!

i understand that. If i was u i wouldnt waste my time on the refuge. This time in the year the refuge sucks cause all the bait fish move out. You can find them there but you have to walk so far out and that sucks. If you do try it let me know how you do. The refuge will start going again when the ice starts to deterioate. Good luck, the ice is about 24-26 inches and real safe

I was just there thur.-sat. did real good considering the major cold front. we went out of prairie hills camp ground in 22-24 feet of water. caught real nice perch and eyes. It was my first trip there, I definitely will be back. Hopefully soon.

muskeez - I think that might be a new place, on a bay just west of school bus point. Heard something went in there. You might give Grenville sport mart a call, they would know. 605-486-4641 - Jeff

I'm wondering if Bluedog's any good this time of year, I beleave it's only 10 - 11 feet tops, if that.

also, what's going on off the Kango landing? (waubay, out of webster) We'll drop a line at Buster's hopefully soon, definatly after MN. closes.

Got limits Friday and Saturday out of Kango. Sunday was a little slower, but still did OK. The bite is very streaky, but when the school comes through be ready, 'cause you can knock out a limit in a short period of time. Didn't hear any great reports off of Blue Dog, or any of the other neighboring lakes for that matter.

Thanks for the info Mr. Buck. I asume limits of both pearch and walleyes? or just pearch. You ever target the gators? some monster pike in there.

why do the only crappie seem to come off the Grenvill end of the lake? my sister's got a trailer on Bresky Bay (down from Kango), so that's "camp" when we come out. we hamer everything but crappies. and go off the road at Grenvill or to Enimy for them.

That whole stretch coming out of grenville is good in the spring. Hardwater's another story, and one I dont know too well. we've set up in the outer edge of the trees at the far corner and got a few last year. I'm a gator nut mostly, but with four lines, you can cover all the bases. we like it alot! especialy when the season closes here. one heck of a forage base in waubay.

dragonfly,

Just perch. We picked up a couple of keeper 'eyes, but that action was pretty slow overall. No northerns either, altough some friends watched a couple move through on the AquaView. Sure shut down the perch bite for awhile grin.gif

We checked out both Pickerel and Enemy Swim after we had our perch one day. There seemed to be very little going on at Pickerel, and just a few guys targeting walleyes on the humps at Enemy Swim. Bait shops reported most everything was happening on Waubay. Good luck!

Thanks NW, forgot to ask about snow cover. can we drive off the beaten path with a normal 4 weel drive?

comeing out friday, will be at Andy's on bresky bay, but tend to end up at Busters alot. Maby an un-oficial FM meeting is in order? I'd like to show my tip-up invention to anyone interested, a "break away" that let's the user land the fish with a rod and reel. I'd elaborate further, but am on "thin ice". tough to discuss stuff you dont see at sportsmans warehouse. If you dont think it's interesting, I'll buy a round, how's that? a travel trailer size furnace teck could get some aditional perks. and their might be some venison steaks in the cards as well.

Dragonflag, the grenville area of waubay has all the various struture elements they prefer / need throughout the year. starting with ample wind protected shorelines for spawning. lots of timber / brush flats. warm inlet areas (culverts) on the grenville grade for early spring feeding, etc. As long as there is adequate food within that area, I suspect the crappie population will remain concentrated on that end of the lake.

I am not sure if it was grenville or not but 2 yrs ago when I fished out of the Waubay refuge (with the great big tower on the hill) and caught crapppies mixed in with the perch and eyes. sorry if it is a stupid question but was this grenville or not? Thanks in advance!!! GOOD FISHIN!!!

I'm not certan, but theirs a tower on the webster end thats visible from the Kango acess. maby thats the one you saw. Good insight jr7, but waubay is all a bunch of bays, inlets & backwaters. I think you called it, mostly on the drain tiles, (culverts).

Guess we wont be out this weekend after all, freezing rain. still would like to show my tip-up to anyone of interest, again, all the long range visibelity of a flag, only you come up with your rod and reel come "showtime".

just set your drag & watch that flag.

DragonFlag.
