Electric Auger size...thoughts?

I've decided to buy an electric auger. the question i have is which size? I currently have an 8" hand auger, it's not bad, but I wont drill a hole unless i know i am going to fish somewhere. I have a vex and a camera so I'm able to gather info about locations both before and after I drill a hole.

Ok to the question. I've heard that drilling a 7" hole is much easier than drilling an 8" hole. I know how much manpower it takes to drill a 8" hole, but I've never drilled a 7" to compare the effort. In terms of battery life, I figure if a 7" hole is that much easier, the electric auger would be able to drill more holes on a single charge. That being said, if I buy a 7", i dont want to sit around and wish i would have bought the 8". Knowing that I dont really drill 15 holes in a day, (i might, though) what's the reasons for one size over the other given the situation? I see an extra battery is only 35-40 bucks so I could always have 2 batteries if I need to drill that much more. Just seeing if someone has any useful advice?

TH, I have the Strikemaster electric 8" I bought mine last season and absolutely love it. 15 holes should be no problem w/ a full charge. This past Saturday when I was out w/ my wife & kids I even reopened the holes I had fished previously w/ precaution as to keeping it level(bubble on top) This unit weighs similar to gas units and definitely beats a hand auger. The unit even comes w/ a cable to hook up to your vehicle if you drive out on the ice and battery charge becomes low. I believe there are alot of people that may be unsure of this unit. It may be a few seconds slower but that's okay w/ me.

Has anyone tried the Strikemaster electric auger that have their own rechargeable battery pack? They can also be hooke up to a 12 volt battery. How well do the work and how many holes can you drill in 2 feet of ice?

I've been trying to just buy the electric power head....no luck I even called strikemaster- no deal need to buy the whole thing.

Please report how your new auger works and good luck finding one, mpst places are sold out.

All the new augers are too expensive for me to afford. I'd prefer an electric over a gas auger since you can drag a deep-cycle battery along in your sled and hook most of them up to it to keep drilling and it's even better when you can drive on the ice and just hook it up to the car.

Less mess too! I hate mixing gas and don't look forward to having any fuel residue on the carpet in the back of my SUV. That's another nice thing about electrics.
