Sw icer
Fished Taylor the thirty first. My long time fishing buddy caught several macs in the twenty inch range.Ice was eighteen to twenty inches. You need a sled to fish here. We had my buddy's 650 Artic Cat {a great machine}.We could not get around like the snowmobiles. The weather was great had a good time.Fished Big Blue the next two days,as always the fishing was great. We caught several sixteen to eighteen inch bows and some nice browns .The largest brown ,twenty two inches, was full of perch. We returned most of the fish ,had to keep a couple for the table.Blue never fails to please, that is why I return year after year.I hope to go back back in February. The ice was fifteen inches at Old Stevens and eighteen near the Lake City bridge. There was some open water between Stevens and Elk Creek, most of the west end is open.D.O.W. told me some big perch were being caught in open water at Soap Creek. Dan DAN the fisherman
Thanks for the report. What was working? Any Macs out of Big Blue? Any perch through the ice? Thanks, Dan
Chad Wold
Icer, Did you happen to fish the mouth of the canyon west of old stevens creek? If so how thick was the ice there? It looks like pretty new ice. We've have had some sucsess there early in the year for mac's. The ice is going to start making fast with a little cold weather thats hitting us now. We need the snow bad because there not much left.If you go out take your cleats or skates Trying to get back mid to late week to the Blue,Work permiting. Sw icer
Dan,we did'nt get any perch through the ice or any macs at Blue.Green fatboys tipped with mealworm and green gitzits or tub jigs tipped with mw or small strip of suckermeat. It seems like the trout are going for anything resembling small perch.I'd like to know how to fish for perch.I don't if it's good that there but there is no limit on the tasty critters at Blue, according to Randy at Berfields in Gunnison. John19
I've never fished Blue Mesa, about how far is it from Denver?
Chad Wold
John, Its about 3 to 4 hrs ,depending on roads and how you drive ,and thats from west denver. Somedays the macs can be real slow and others real hot.Maybe its just me ,ive only recently started fishing for them, about 5 years ,and I think there is fairly good learning curve. They can just be real picky sometimes at the Blue. But the thought of a 45 pound hog keeps my interest peaked pretty well. John19
Yea, It would keep me going to! It's not to bad of a drive from Montrose I bet .
lucky7
John:The big blue is awesome! We have had many 100 fish days there! I hope the Perch don't ruin the fishery! It would be worth the trip from Greeley. I usually drive up Friday night and stay at the Holiday Inn Express and fish Saturday. I do not like the leave at 2:00 am gig anymore. If you're interested I would love to go with you.
Chad Wold
Just a hop, skip and jump for me .I can be there in about 45 minutes or less.Theres still alot of open water on the west end of the lake.Sure wish I had a smaller boat with an outboard cause I'd fish it until it was hard water. Its a fun lake for trolling. Chad Wold
Bill, I know of a place in montrose who did rentals only not sure if they still offer them. The name is English Brothers Welding /Polaris.You might be better off loking for someone in Gunnison first. Its a little more on your way.Im pretty sure youll find someone there.Let me know when your coming this way and maybe we can hook-up.I try to fish every weekend ,if I can, during the ice season.I thought of fishing some different lakes ,some with walleyes, but not to sure where the best would be.Need to try more in the summer to get familiar with some other lakes but it always seems I work too much to really get far from home.Anyway, pray for SUB-ZERO weather .
