Frogger
Heading to the Morris Area this weekend to hopefully chase some roosters. Curious as to how much snow cover there is and if all the swamps are frozen solid. Thanks for the help and good luck to all.
gspman
Little to no snow cover. You should be able to walk in the cattails in most places.Don't be stupid about walking on the ice though. I wouldn't walk across the middle yet. No pheasant is worth being up to your shoulders in freezing water for. My experience last weekend was that the slough grass which rims the cattails had ice that wouldn't support me but the cattails did have ice that would support me. Fyi, I weigh about 215 lbs fully loaded with my gear & gun. There was water on top of the ice in the open areas in the slough I was hunting too. Don't know why but that was the case last weekend where I was hunting. My guess is with the colder weather this week the ice should be more safe come this weekend than it was last weekend. Have fun & stay safe.gspman
freighttrain50
i was out there 2 weeks ago and there was ice in the sloughs. we walked a few and my buddy broke through a few times just up to his knees. ice should be fine though this weekend. if i was going out there this weekend i would focus on the cattails and sloughs. didn't see any birds anywhere else. lots of birds in the cattails but very skiddish. if you have enough guys i would try and pinch them in the middle or post. saw quite a few birds but very weary of our presense. Good luck and hunt safely.Train
sid05
Frogger, the bird count is good and the cattails are the place to be. The ice in the cattails was pretty good two days ago and it has only been colder since. Trust me! I was well over 215lbs in 9th grade.
