Duck Hunting Down South

Recommended Posts

For some reason my reply didnt post, here it goes again,

Leaving tonite for a Kansas goose/phesant hunt. I think license is $80 for small game. We have a connection or two down there but mostly just ask permission for a place to hunt. We split the cost of gas and lodging, I really dont expect to spend much over $400 for the 5 day trip. I'll give you a final tally when we get back. If you have all the gear, it shouldnt cost that much. I've made the mistake of going to Gander Mtn and saw the waterfowl clothing sale so I'm already up to $150 so far. But this isnt gear I needed, just upgrades from the stuff I have. How can you pass up a set of Guide Series bibs for half price? Darn impulse shopping.

Well, I spent a total of $550 for a 5 day trip in Kansas. The biggest expense was the hotel rooms. That includes the stuff I bought at Gander before I left. We saw probably 50,000 geese the first day we sat out in our blinds but they were all snows, blues, and specks. We had a tough time getting them to decoy since they were a mile high and we had all Honker dekes. There were a lot of mallards down there too, we stayed in Pratt the first couple days which is probably 50 miles northwest of Wichita. There was a lot of water in the fields down there, and I guess that was the hotbed for geese. Most farmers wanted you to pay to hunt their land but we got into a flooded cornfield for free because we talked to the kid, not the dad.

Then we went up to Northern Kansas, and hunted pheasants around the Glen Elder Resoviour which is fairly close to Manhatten, half hour south of the Nebraska border. We saw a lot of pheasants there but they were educated, as soon as we'd step into a sorgum field they would all fly out the other end. It was hard to get a close shot. We'd see probably between 50 to 60 birds in three hours in the afternoon. A small game license and all the stamps (except federal) was around $80.

Matt, we had a very poor hatch in our area. The rains came justat the wrong time (high water). There were some fields that had a "lot" of ducks using them but they were posted up tight. I can't remember a fall that had such perfect food resources for field feeding mallards. But they just didn't hang around long. Matt without giving any names roughly how far south of TR were you? I'm glad yo hear you got into them!
