cashcrews
I'm thinking about getting a wall tent for hunting season. Does anyone have any opinions on these, recommendations, etc? Looks like Cabelas has some decent models, like their Alaknak II 12x12. Base price is around $600-700, but I'm guessing you've got to spend $1000 to get everything you want.Any advice, helpful tips, or whatever would be appreciated.Cashcrews
hksbh
I have researched wall tents for the past 2 months and have came to the conclusion that the only material to get is canvas as all other materials will sweet. Each person in the tent will put out 1/2 liter of mosture in breathing in 1 nite sleeping and all that will condense on the ceilings of anything but canvas because the canvas will breath.Canvas is a much better insulator for colder weather and will hold heat much better. There are many types of canvas and don't be fouled by weight of the canvas. It is the thread count. Look for a tent made with sunforger canvas that is grade A and double filled and fire resistant.A lot of tent makers are using grade b canvas and it is not worth it as you will only need to buy one tent in your lifetime if you take care of it by not putting it away when it is wet. Guest
Check out A. Davis Tent in Colorado. They have a HSOforum, and you actually get a live human being who builds tents for a living when you call on the telephone.
IFallsRon
Also check out the canvas place in Rogers. I think they advertise in Outdoor News. They've had one off and on in their parking lot. My mother-in-law's lake neighbors used to have a big group every fishing opener. They used an all-canvas wall tent and had a ripstop nylon fly to keep off the weather. icehousebob
Dick and Katie Kop from Hector,Minn. make great wall tents, as well as tipis and A frames.I've used their tents for over thirty years and I've not had a complaint. Their business,RK Lodges, backs what they sell.Buckskinners use their tents and tipis more in one year than most people would in ten and most in Minn. buy from RK. As for material, there are several grades of canvas. The best is a tight weave, treated one called Sunforger. I've had a heavily used A frame for close to 15 years that is as watertight as the day I got it. If you order a tent with a stovepipe hole, be sure you get the fire ******ant treatment. Its required in Minn. but not some of the other states. I use a large A frame instead of a wall tent because it takes fewer poles, sets up quicker and can be set up by one person, although a wall tent is mighty comfortable for a long stay in yucky weather. Good luck.
icehousebob
Message for HKSBH, Sorry about repeating what you said about Sunforger and canvas quality. I was reading this at work and got interrupted by real work, and missed what you said on the first reading. A couple more things about Sunforger; It is much stronger, so it won,t tear in the wind, it will resist acid rain and staining better than other canvas, so it lasts much longer, and if you have to pack it away wet, it won't mold if you don't get it dried for a couple of days.
