GunDr
Sorry I didn't see your post earlier. Hope you had good luck last week. I go up to the pipestone chain 4 times a year. I ice fish for trout every New Years Day, trout fish at ice out, fish June and the end of July. I've got a friend that has a house on Clearwater. The summer trips...I generally fish before sun-up, and also start around 9:00 pm. The water is sooo clear, must of the big fish are deep (60ft or more). But as it gets dark, you can see them move up the graph, that by midnite most are near the top 25ft. Our group of four usually do well at night. Walleyes have ranged from 4lbs to 15lbs.We generally troll with our electric motors, using two batteries. We can get about 5-6hrs of trolling time. Trolling with rapalas that dive deep. The chrome and orange/green tiger stripe seem to work the best. Long line these babies waayy back. The smallies are almost everywhere there is rock. My most exciting moments have been catching 45" muskies at 3 o'clock in the morning, the past two years.Don't be afraid to troll through the deep water at night. I've troll over 75ft water and have caught some nice eyes. There is a lot of near shore structure on clearwater. On Pipestone I generally only fish trout, though the other species are just as good as Clearwater. Just I don't like to pay the $20 portage fee every day.Sorry for being late, but maybe it'll help other first timers.GunDr
