Granby - Spring Break

Recommended Posts

We'll be in the Winter Park next week (March 13th-20th) and plan on hitting Granby at least a couple of days. Looking for current conditions or fishing reports from anyone whose been there recently, or heard anything. Also, I've never fished Grand Lake, how far is it from Granby? Any suggestions, comments, or fishing partners as always are greatly appreciated.
John

Hey John,
Just stay on the highway all the way past Lake Granby. 1st you'll see Shadow Mt. Reservoir. Keep driving and you will come to a intersection. Vear right into the town of Grand Lake. The main body of the lake is too deep to fish. You want to head for the open water channel that runs between Shadow Mt. and Grand lake. Its quite a walk but drill and find the weed beds. Then get into 20-40ft of water close to the weeds and have at it. Some nice Bows up in the weed pockets also. Good luck,
Dan

I got to fish 4 mornings last week at Granby, with a variety of success. The first two days, (Tues & Wed) were pretty good. fished from 6-10 and caught about a dozen lakers each morning. Lost one extremely big fish that I swear was a snag. I felt it hit(hard) and I reeled it up about 20ft and then it just stopped. It didn't run or anything, it just stopped right under the hole about 15ft down. I've never caught a big laker, but this felt like bringing up a log, no fight really at all. well needless to say I got impatient and pulled up hard, and lost whatever I had on. I'm still shaking my head over this one! Fished off the point by the boat ramp the first morning, then around the corner the next. Fished Fri & Sat and things sure changed. Fished the exact same holes as Tues ( on Friday ) and caught two lakers. moved in shallow and caught some rainbows. Saturday , I went over towards dike 3 and got skunked. man was it deep over there. fished 70,50 and 20 ft of water, but the 20 was like 10yds away from shore. Great weather thought, only windy the first day, and we skied 6 days in a row. An excellent spring break!

John:

I wish I had the same luck. Fished Monday and got one bite off the boat ramp in about 40 ft of water. Two guys close by caught about ten lakers. Nothing big. I was so frustrated that I drove to Shadow Mt. and Grand Lake on Tuesday....Both are unfishable with lots of open water. No one was on Grandby yesterday so I read a book and took a two hour nap. Not quite the catching but none the less great weather and a relaxing time.
