Guest
Hey there! I was wondering if you CO folk use flashers or other types of fish finders here in the high country? Which do you prefer? Thank you!
Guest
Gosh no, our water is so clear here we just look through the water and pick out the ones we want.
Guest
Just funnin with ya. Most of us use flashers. we read all the posts of what the guys in Minn and Wis are using so its pretty similar. It is just that this year we have to fish through the ice from a boat. This is the worst warm water ice I have seen for years.
Guest
Vexilar, is the choice for ice fishing by far,you can see you jig and the fish as it approches your bait instantley. Also it makes ice fishing seem like your playin a video game, you can see the reactions of the fish.Above all it lets you know if there are fish there or not.Good fishin[This message has been edited by ice cube (edited 01-17-2003).]
ShouldaBen
I agree with ice cube. I bought a Fishin Buddy a few years back and while it seemed to work pretty well, I found it too overly optimistic. If there were as many fish as often as it beeped I would have swore I was fishing in a commercial trout pond.Last year I invested in a Vexilar F18. You actually can see your hook and sinker on it and it really does help. Especially if the fish aren't on the bottom becuase you can raise your line up to meet to finned critters. They are pricey but well worth it!
Guest
Well, thank you for all of your responses! Have you guys heard anything about or used the "graph display" w/ a flasher mode? Cabelas has a portable unit that has this function, is this similar to a Vex (I think it is the Eagle 320)? I'm looking for a unit that I can use on the ice and use in my jon boat. Thank you very much for your help! By the way, Wolford is still fishing quite well by the dam. Not quite like the action we were getting there 3-4 weeks ago, but still pulling trout through the hole! Guest
If you want a real education in flashers and the difference between Vexilar and the others. go to the main forum and click on the discussion about flashers. It is a real informative chat. You will come away a little mind boggled about what these guys can do on the ice. I use a Garmin Blue 240 on my boat in salt water and it is a great tool but I wouldn't think for a moment of using it to ice fish. I used to have an eagle portable and it would beep on the fish and whatever, but I really started to catch fish through the ice when I learned to read and properly use my Vexilar. bry c
I use a Garmin 100 lcd for ice duty and it works just fine. It has the flasher function but I prefer to use the normal screen. You have to turn off all of the fish id and depth alarm options so anything you mark will appear as a solid line coming in off to the right hand side of the screen. I rigged mine with the blue box, a 12v battery from batteries plus, and a flexible metal arm to mount the transducer. I have to mess with the metal arm a little to get it level enough to work right but its no big deal. Alot of people prefer the instant vexilar reading but im a little sceptical as to how quickly things are really happening down there. Bottom line is any sonar is better than no sonar unless you fish shallow enough to sight fish
