Dan Thiem
Can a first year fawn buck be more than just a button buck ?Could it possibly be a spike or even a fork ?
Bogsucker
Copied from another site "Antler growth in bucks begins when they are fawns. However, buck fawns never grow antlers larger than short "buttons," or pedicles, which on rare occasions become hardened."

WaveWacker
Bogsucker and Jim are correct. The small/tight racked spikes, forks, sixes, eights (and even some tens) are most times 1 1/2 year olds
Mr. B
About 15 years ago I shot a fork that still had spots. This dear was not a small fawn. When I shot it I actually thought it was a doe. The main antler was probably 8 inches long and the other one branching off was 3 inches or so.If it is correct that yearlings can not grow anything more than buttons that would mean this dear was 1.5 to 2 years old and still had it spots? Bogsucker
Mr. B Either way it was an anomaly.
