Sweet or meat?

Recommended Posts

I was just wondering if any experienced bear hunters had suggestions if boars like sweets or other foods like meats and greases? I have hunted two years now and have seen nothing but sows and cubs. Last year on opening weekend I saw 11 bear (1 set was a sow and two cubs that came in twice)but no boars. I have always used sweet rolls and a blueberry syrup. The baits are always hit HARD, so the bears are eating the rolls, but should I maybe try something on the other end of the food spectrum?

If you are using meats cut them up in small pieces. That way they don't just grab a big piece and walk away with it.Also, meats start to rot and stink.Sometimes they roll in it and get their fur all stinky. That makes for a smelly campsite when you bring in your trophy.

I used to mix beef fat right in with my bakery goods. Like Dan said cut it into small pieces and don't use more than a pound or two per bait. Just give them a taste. If your going to use fryer grease I would suggest pouring it on the ground in and around your bait, on the logs too. The grease is really good as an attractant and for spreading scent but I wouldn't dump it right on my bait.

The boars may be coming in well after shooting hours. Try using less bait so the first bear or two clean it out. This will force the late comers to start shopping earlier.
