and the fishing is .......hard
After endless rain ithe weather here has gone nuts - temps in the 30s and still, humid days have not helped fishing one bit. I don't know how USA carp respond to heat but here they tend to go off the feed big time and just sunbathe - I nearly had my first blank session for months this week, only picking up a couple just as the lake was closing ( alot of commercial lakes here close at sunset ).

Anyway enough of my woes - Smartcast. I picked up on this on the shore fishing forum - blimey what an idea. I've found out we can get them here now ( at the usual inflated price ) and I am sorely tempted. I wouldn't want it for fish location - call me an old fashioned fuddy duddy but I prefer to use experience and observation. However it looks like it would be ideal for mapping out lakes to find features on the bottom. I've checked out the HSOforum for it and read the specs however they never tell the true story do they? Have any of you guys and gals used this thing? If you have I've got a few questions.

a) Does it work?
how good is it at showing small features
c) how good is it in shallow water ( i'm thinking 3 or 4 feet depths.
d) is it reliable - especialy in the wet ( considering my rain god status )
e) how does it calibrate depth - feet and inches?

Any views you have would be welcome. Is it ethical? I know some peolple here would regard using one of these to find fish as cheating, not good sport old chap etc.

Smartcast - I'm gonna wait a year or two to let them get the bugs out.
After our last presidential election - the only thing that could surprise me in American politics would be rational action. Hope that ugly heat wave doesn't give you a nasty fish-kill. I remember those dry/mud creeks in Suffolk with boats just kind of mired. Never quite figured that out.

Man, things can get crazy real quickly when a statement is void of 'tone of voice' and facial expressions. True, this site & it's content is about fishing. I apologize if I offended anyone.

yeah I can see where you're coming from now ( I think ). that wasn't a statement, just me wondering out loud about the craziness of actors etc running for political office.

For the record I'm pretty apolitical - in much the same way that if I get accused of being racist I always reply that I'm not - I hate eveybody! Politicians - a curse on all their houses..
