Carp Fishing (no really)

Recommended Posts

I have asked this question before and did not get many responses. Hopefully someone can help me out this time. I have heard there are some monster carp in Mille Lacs and I would like to try to tie into a few. Can anyone give me any location tips? I would like to fish from shore if possible. Thanks in advance.

Jasonk,
I know of a really good spot but it must be fished from a boat. If you'd be willing to show me how to fish for them, I'd love to take you out there. It's something I've always wanted to do because I've heard what kind of fight they put up. Whadda ya say?

Jason;

Checkout the Carp/Non-gamefish forum, there are threads in there that are right up our ally! One guy talking about 50+ pounders!

Hi guys,

I like to bowfish for carp. Got into it last summer and had a blast. I would love to try Mille Lacs but have no idea where to go. I'm also involved in a bowfishing tournament this summer which begins May 1st. Payout is quite good. $1200 good! Anyone interested? I'd love to tag along on Mille Lac if anyone wants to go!

Gentlemen,

I would also like to throw in my name for a trip with anyone who has successfully fished specifically for carp in a large lake. Mille Lacs sounds a lot like what I saw on Clearwater, but I was never able to catch carp intentionally on that lake. If we can figure this out, there is a virtually unlimited supply of 20+ pound fish out there, and the potential for a new world record.

Thanks for all of the responses. A friend of mine from Holland stayed with me for a month last summer and showed me the European way to catch carp. Very effective, very fun, and very addicting. Unfortunately it works best from shore. It may work from a boat if it was calm enough. From what I have heard there are more than a few state records swimming around Mille Lacs and I would really like to have a go at them this summer. A carp over 20 pounds puts up a heck of a battle, I can't imagine hooking into one 40+. I am in the process of building a 12 foot carp rod right now. I can't wait to test it out. LundproV I will try to call you tonight. Gull guide I will respond to your link. As far a shooting them goes, I am a bowhunter but I think these big carp are too valuable to shoot. I know there are a ton of them out there, and in some cases they need to be thinned out, but catch a big one once and it may change your mind.

    • I just figured that it is easy enough to just get a 3 bank so when the boat is not in use I can keep all 3 batteries charged. I have not bough a charger yet, maybe I will give it some more thought. Edit: After thinking this over, with the size, weight, and heat output of the charger (as well as the cost) I think it makes sense to just buy a 2 bank charger, I have a smaller charger i can use on the starting battery when the boat is sitting at home. Forgive me, for i am a retired engineer and I have to obsess over everything...
    • Congrats on the motor!  I think you’ll like it.   I can’t say much on the charger location but I’ve seen them under the lid in back compartments and under center rod lockers.  160 degrees is more than I expected to hear.   Curious why you’re opting for a 3 bank charger with a 24V trolling motor.  Unless you don’t feel you be running you big motor enough to keep that battery up as well?
    • I did buy an Minnkota Ulterra, thanks for the recommendations. I had a bunch of Cabela"s bucks saved up, which helped. Now i need to get an onboard battery charger. Where do you guys mount these things in your boat? The manufacturer I am looking at {Noco genius) says tht their 3-bank charger will run at 160 degrees, seems like a lot of heat in an enclosed compartment? Thanks for any input on this.
    • You're very lucky a troop of Sea Monkey's didn't carry you away.
    • Wasn't terrible at a state park beach. Antelope island maybe.  I wouldn't recommend it as a beach destination tho.  Figured I was there, I'm getting in it.
    • The water looked and smelled disgusting with hundreds of thousands of birds sh*tting in there.  About as gross as the Salton Sea. When I duck hunted there I didn't even want to touch the water.
    • It's kinda gross with the algae in the summer but I got in it anyway.  Wanted to see the increased bouyancy at work.  You can kinda tuck yourself into a ball and you'll just float with your head above water.  When dry off you look diamond encrusted with the salt.
    • We went to the flats too. I dipped a tire on the rental car onto it just to say I’ve been there, but it was still pretty soft from winter melt. After seeing some moron in a BMW suv get dragged out of the muck I had no intention of repeating his stupidity.
    • I've been out on the flats. It's like being on a different planet
    • I’ve only seen that from the air.
