Keith Kavajecz
Got out on Winnebago this afternoon with my son Mike. Only fished for 2 hours but ended up with 40 keepers including Crappie, 7 to 9 inch Gills, and Jumbo Perch. I had heard the afternoon bite was best and was not disappointed. Fish were on my screen (a Lowrance Elite 5) pretty much all the time. I was fishing a small jig - orange and chartruese was best tipped with one wax worm. I was jiggling about 1.5 feet off the bottom - if fish came in quick I simply had to stop jigging and normally got a bite. Slow risers I had to play with, but typically after raising them one or two feet they would also bite. Nothing finessy about the bite - easy to detect. The fish were not on structure (rock or weeds) instead were cruising on sand flats, 7 to 8 feet deep. Good times!
Chase Parsons
For those interested, I was out on the 18th...same area as Keith was and the fish were still there. It's no secret, there were a decent number of guys off of Black Wolf but new reports from a friend that lives right there, were that he could see waves on Sunday morning. That huge wind blew the ice right off the west shore and up onto land on the east. It's actually a pretty ugly situation right now. Any plans to ice fish Winnebago in the near future, be careful! Even off High Cliff (north east side) over the weekend, a four wheeler when down and the guy didn't make it. Be safe out there and good luck!
