Jason Hamilton
Had a great morning on Lake Winnipeg in search of greenback walleye. Caught a nice mix of eater sized fish and a few better ones. Keyed in on ice ridges, these fish are using the ridges as highways traveling up and down them. Small moves (walking distance) were enough to stay on the school today. Caught fish on Darters, lipless baits and deadsticked minnows. Ice was found to be around 20" and travel was a breeze in the vehicles. Jim Kusuda
Blue Live Target! Jason, I have been able to ice fish there a few years back. Those are really different colored walleyes in Lake Winnipeg. Why are they like that? Great Pics!

Jason Hamilton
Hey Jim, the prevailing thought is the limestone substrate of the lake is what gives them this unique color. However it has been a topic of discussion lately as to just how different they are from other walleye. They certainly seem to behave differently than eyes elsewhere, even in large featureless basins....always something to learn.
Tod Todd
What awesome color those fish have would be cool to have them on the wall next to a blue walleye and other color walleyes.

Mike Stark
Chasing greenbacks around is almost as addicting as fishing for lake trout! Nice fish.

rockman
Are Kopper's Livetarget lipless crankbaits still the preferred rattlebait there?
Jason Hamilton
Hey rockman, A lot of folks are still using the Live Targets...they still catch fish. That said there are a host of other lipless crankbaits that ice fish. In my mind, I think the frequency of vibration/sound of rattles of different baits work better on different days. Fish really seem to show a preference for 1 over the others most days.
