Keith Kavajecz
Had a great trip up to Lake Of the Woods the last 7 days. First Pete Maina, Jim Hudson and I filmed a show for The Next Bite (airs our 4th week - about Feb 6th on NBC sports). We fished out the flats outside of Pine Island - best for us was outside all of the the resort fish houses in about 28 feet of water. Best lures were a Glow Pink Stop Sign (jigging spoon) with a Gold back. Add the head of a minnow and jiggle it aggressively. On my dead rod a pink and white FinTech Nuckle ball was best - twin tail two minnows. In both cases it was important to see the fish coming in (I use a Lowrance Elite 5) - and rip the lure up about 2 feet - the fish would case after it and suck it in! Super fun. The road out of Adrians (across 4 mile bay) was in good shape and Brian Ney at Adrians had good bait (and fishing info). For the second show, we did an Ice Team episode (should be on this web site in about 3 weeks) we were based out of Sportsmans. Same lures, but we ventured way out in the lake to the Knight/Bridges area. We were the only ones out there - ice was pretty good - lots of shoves though. We took our time and always had 6" or more of use - usually 10-12". We fished the edge of structure - caughts lots of fish just off the structure in the "mud" - 32 feet seemed best. The show was shot with Jason Mitchell, Jeff Anderson, Pete Maina and myself - so I didn't always get to see what everyone was using - show should have some great advice in it. BTW - if you are interested in Eel Pout - Maina seemed to be the expert on that (and claims they are good to eat)!

Pete Maina
I am Captain Eel Pout! (actually it's what's for dinner tonight) Talk about a battle. Seriously a great time though. Was fun fishing with a good group of guys; with everyone trying something different it made things interesting.
Gillfisher
Pete, what is your favorite way to prepare the pout? I have been talking about catching a couple and trying them for the past couple years and this is going to be the year to do it! I hope I can get one or two anyway, is it better to target them at night? When I was just a lad we used to catch them on the Fox River in Oshkosh at night during the walleye run. I have not caught one during the day.
Boar
Use your same recipies for pout that u would for walleye, my fave is a good beer batter or crushed potatoe chip in kettle chip style of the many flavors. Hnaging a rattle reel two inches off the bottom in a sleeper shack on LOW with a big glow jig with several big chubs an a couple squished ones for scent can be very effective. Boar
Yepperdo, heading to LOW this weekend, cant wait, When my kids are with I like to let just one of the same rattle rigs hang a foot of the bottom while fishing for eyes in the mud flats just off of a hump or reef, always seem to hit one during the day when looking for marbles. Good luck, later boar
