Anyone else fishing West River

Recommended Posts

I've been reading the forums for several months now and haven't seen any other West River posts. My brother and I have been on the ice for a little over a week now that it cooled off and was wondering if anyone else is having any luck this side of the Mighty Mo. We've been having real good luck on our stock dams out here on the prarie. Caught alot of bass, crappie, and perch. We've been catching them on minnows on jig heads and jigging spoons tipped with waxworms. Let me know how you're doing.

Waterbeater,

I'm not West River, but I've been hoping to hear some news about the fishing in the Hills. I guess I'm surprised that there've been no postings from people out there.

I'm sure there are some lookers.....why don't you folks sign on and post?

Hey, WB.......I've got a question for you. If it's not too much trouble, send me an e-mail at [email protected]. Thanks!

I was out south west of Murdo the 18th and 19th and three of us caught 32 perch and 37 bass on saturday and 34 perch and 35 bass on Sunday. Only about 3-4 inches of ice. We couldn't get to all the dams we wanted to because of the wind/snow but its tough to leave one dam when your catching fish anyway.

Hey jb,
Thanks for resonding and sounds like you had an awsome time. I went out one Sat.and Sun. and did really well also about 30 perch, 20 bass, and 5 crappie total for both days. They bit really well til noon then nothing till about 4:30 both days. You could set your watch by it. We took the shanty off today because of the warm weather and wind. Doesn't sound good for fishing for a while either.
Huskminn,
Thanks also for responding. You're right, it seems like there would be more interest out here. I will send you an email tonight.

Welcome Waterbeater
How are your stock dams holding up?A friend that ranches in eastern SD checked his the other day with the ice auger but it went from ice to mud,no water. Its plenty dry here. frown.gif
I see by your post you found some good fishing! When we had good fishing we had poor ice,now we have good ice but the fishing has been slow.I think the weather has been to active(too many fronts).
Nice too see another rancher on board!!
I hope all your calves hit the ground feet first!! wink.gif

Try To Fish,
Hey, like you said, it's great to see another rancher on here. Yes the water situation around here is dire. If we don't get run off this spring most of the herd will be liquidated. We've got quite a few good dams with springs in them but not enough in the right places. We've got our fingers crossed. Sorry to hear that you're in the same boat as us with the drought. As you know, when you start calving thats when it seems to really snow. These winters have been a real catch 22 haven't they. If it is cold enough to ice fish you roll through the hay but with easy winters there's no fishing and no run off. Thanks for the post and good chatting with you.

sorry to hear about your water deleima.over here they say "if you don't like the weather wait 5 minutes it will change" and it sounds like this week is going to be snowy, mabey the change is on its way!like you said calving will soon be here.
Do you fish the missouri river?above or below Oahe? I have above, from shore ,a long time ago. I hear there are lots of small walleye. should be good fishing in a few years.
good luck

Try To Fish,
I'm ashamed to say that I have never fished on the Missouri. I've had a few offers but somehow it just hasn't worked out. It is foolish I know, I'm only 125 miles away. I don't have a big boat and the shore always looks so crowded.
