Minnehaha County Lakes

Sorry if you saw this topic and were hoping I was going to report several hot bites close by.

Any of you fished Loss, Lost, Beaver, Twin, Grass or Clear Lakes. I haven't but was curious on if some of these lakes even have fish in them. Loss had some big perch in it until it supposedly winterkilled out two winters ago. I'm not sure if state did stocking or if any actually survived or not? I've see people fishing there but other than a sucker, I didn't see any fish on the ice.

Lost and Grass; I know many years ago Lost had some perch in it but I never caught any of any size and haven't been there since. Has Grass lake ever had any fish in it?

Beaver as I understand it is a rearing pond. I believe that they also have the one big walleye limit so assume they are in there. A guy this past weekend at Brant told me he knew someone who caught a 2.5 lb. crappie out of there this past fall. I doubt it was actually that big, but who knows.

Clear Lake has been good occasionally but seems like it dies out too often for the fish to get any size.

Twin is supposedly a small perch lake. I've only fished it once and got skunked. It seems like I heard on the carp line that they were catching some nice 4 - 5 lb. walleyes out of there in the fall of 2001 but haven't heard any first hand accounts.

Sure would be nice if these lakes would occasionally be hot but suppose being so close to SF would not allow that to happen, at least not for very long.

Anybody else have any firsthand knowledge of these lakes and their potential?

I have not fished any of these lakes this year. But I drove by Clear lake on my way home Sunday from Diamond lake. Nobody out on the lake. There was some sled tracks in the snow.

Lost lake didn't see anyone fishing.

Loss lake I heard that the perch fishing was slow, but if you got one it was a nice one.

There is two shacks on Beaver lake also.

Diamond, Beaver, and Twin lakes all have the one walleye over 24 inches. I know diamond has some big northerns in it, so I don't think the bullheads are to big of a problem there.

Maybe they are trying to increase the size of the perch on Twin lake.

It is my understanding that Beaver Lake (and perhaps Twin?) has a walleye experiment underway. It is not a rearing pond, they are just stocking a lot of walleyes in the lake to keep the small bullhead population under control and hopefully provide a little more viable sport fishery on that lake.

This is an experiment in progress, which is why they have the tight harvest restrictions. If this works on Beaver, they may try this on other lakes that have similar "problems" with huge numbers of small bullheads and lackluster sport fish production.

Incidentally, crappie fishing was very good a few years ago on Beaver. The fish were all from one year class, but were very nice in size. Although I have heard that the crappie fishing is mostly gone from the lake now, it is quite possible that leftovers from that year class would be over 2 lbs.
