Hotspotter
What's your opinion on calling at turkeys while scouting? I'm tempted to pull over on the side of the road and hit 'em with some yelps from the car sometimes!Does this affect or "educate" the birds you'll be going after in the nearby future? I've read it both ways from some pretty reputable sources. Whaddya think?Joel
Borch
I leave my turkey calls at home when I scout. I've heard it both ways myself. I've also called sparily while scouting in the past. But I've really noticed that by late season these birds can really be call shy especially on public ground that gets hit hard. So does pre season calling hurt things? I don't know for sure. But hammering them all season with aggressive calling definitely does. So I would guess that there may be some effect. Especially if toms are getting called to hunters in blue jeans or without camo or calling from the truck.Just my opinion though.Borch[This message has been edited by Borch (edited 04-01-2004).]
adaylate
I've had decent luck getting some toms to respond by Gobbling at them.Other wise the only other calling I do while scouting is with a shock call.
TomBow
I leave my turkey calls in the truck or at home when scouting. My theory is that turkeys hear each other call all the time, there may be some minute differences in our turkey calls vs. real birds and repeated calling of birds MIGHT educate them. Pulling up in a truck, then yelping may get the birds to associate yelping that may not quite be perfect (no offense!) with the truck and associate it with man the predator. The only way to know for sure is to ask the turkeys but I got a feelin' they won't say much that we can actually understand! I'd rather play it safe and only call birds when I want one to come in and "lay down".
paintbrush
High people! This is my first post on this site, but I do recognize a few users from other sites. I don't use turkey calls to scout for turkeys.Don't want to have one come in on me and then spook it before the season starts for me.Why take the chance to educate a bird early in the year?Locator calls, and being out early in the morning when the birds gobble on their own up in the roost, will locate a lot of birds.
