Want to go Turkey Hunting

The wife and I would like to go Turkey hunting this year. Does anybody have Turkeys on their land that they wouldn't mind 2 new turkey hunters on their land. The wife is on me about finding some land to hunt on this year. I am willing to trade a grouse, deer or some Northern Minnesota fishing for the hunt.

There is usually a few licenses left over for the later seasons that are made available to unsuccessful applicants on a first come frist served basis and any licenses left after that I think are available to anyone that did not apply in the general drawing.This usually takes place in mid march.

You probably know the answers by now but a heads up for next year: The deadline for spring turkey is in early Dec. and it is a lottery. If you apply for a early season you most likely will get a license every 2 to 3 years (most likely not the first). If you apply for the later seasons (mid May) you ussually get a license every time if its in one of the main zones in SE Minn. The downside is there are fewer birds left and the ones left are harder to hunt. Check out the DNR HSOforum to see if you can try for a tag for the surplus tags. I know the unsuccessful lottery applicants get first crack at them and they usually take most if not all of them. I don't know if general public has a shot next though. The other places to try then would be South Dakota or Missouri where you can buy tags over the counter. I'm going to Missouri. I can get to a co-workers farm in less time than I can drive to Lake of the Woods.

If you really want to go this year you do have a few options. One I would recommend is heading over to the Black Hills in South Dakota. I've hunted there the past 4 years with decent success. The nonresident liscense is $85 and you'll need to apply at least two weeks before you go. Everyone that applies gets a liscense. We do the whole trip for about $300 per person including your liscense depending on gas prices and mileage.

No worry about hunting land as there are thousands of acres of public land with good access to hunt.

Believe me you or your wife will not be disappointed. I'm not able to make the trip this spring. I will definitely miss it. Very beautiful country and birds(merriam subspecies).

Thanks guys, I will talk to my wife and see what she wants to do. I am going to Gander this weekend and will buy a call to start calling. Maybe I will put the strut on for the wife.
