On my iPhone I take any photo I'm trying to post on here and "edit" and hit the crop thing and crop any photo left and right just a tiny bit and for whatever reason it shows up how I want it on here.  It's weird because I'm not cropping it hardly at all many times and that makes the difference.  Maybe that's the solution for any photos you either already took or if you forget to take horizontal.

maybe the crop does it in 4 x 6 or so??   I dont see a crop on my phone. hmmmmm. iphone 5

mines an iPhone 5 also.  Hit "edit" and then it's a box like item with dotted arrows around the box just left of the blue "cancel".  Tap that arrowed box and it will then allow you to crop.

ok, I tried this verticle shot, cropped as a square and it put it on here so its horizontal. all of the other sizes were verticle. interesting

 

my symbols are a little different than here but it did work when I hit square for the crop

cropped that one to 3 x 5 and it flipped it.  

that one i did as origional and it didnt flip it... lol   so maybe all the crop sizes will work other than origional

There is a camera app for android called horizon, it will take photos and video with a level landscape orientation regardless of how you hold the phone. I don't know if it exists for iPhone, but it is something I would look for if I had an iPhone.
