Guest
Hello all. We just added a new pup to our family, a Golden Retriever. Im interested in training him and I live in Fargo. Id like a bird hunting companion. He is 3 mo. Who can I contact to start this in motion?
metrojoe
I can't help you with where to bring him but I would suggest a training facility that trains you to train him. It takes some commitment on your part but I think it's the best way to get to know your dog and vice versa. Best of LuckjoeFYIThe kennel I go to was right down the road from the gun club I shoot at. That may be a place to start. Also they should be listed in the yellow pages.[This message has been edited by metrojoe (edited 12-19-2002).]

Guest
I agree with metrojoe make sure you train with your dog.I trained my own dog and I feel she is better for it. Unlike my uncle who had a kennel train his.I have found that everybody has a different style of hunting and if your dog is not trained to that style headaches occur.I have seen dogs drop birds at there masters feet and head off to the next one, but I made mine release only to me because a wing shot pheasent will take off and run.My dog has retrieved many live birds, my uncle ends up trying to chase them down or get the dog back to get it.And also as far as listening my dog does much better. Start your pup off young and be patcient dont was to discourage it. When it loses interest usually after ten min of a throwing dummy, stop and wait til tomorrow .As it gets older it will get more enthusiastic. And you can never give it enough praise.I did that as a pup and now after I praise her she works twice as hard. There are many books out there that will tell you how and with a little time it is pretty easy just stick with it and you will not be disappointed. GOOD LUCK HAPPY HUNTING NEXT FALL
