Washer between axle/spindle nut and wheel bearing?

Whoaru99

Question

I've always seen some sort of washer between the axle/spindle nut and the wheel bearing. Tore into a camper hub this evening and there was no washer. The spindle/axle isn't slotted for a keyed washer so will any washer of appropriate size be OK there, or is it supposed to be a hardened/special washer?

I've run into them before that have no washer, and had the same thought.    I'm pretty sure some are designed without one. You might find that you may not be able to get the cotter pin in the hole if there is a washer in place. I don't see any reason you can't put one in if you want to if it will fit.

I have run into the same thing. You can get the washers at you local Norther Tool, Auto Parts, Fleet Farm, L&M, etc. in the trailer isle. If everything fits when you done, great. If there is some clearance issue with the cotter pin than put it back together as it was.
