South Dakota hunts???

Hey bird lovers, Any of you have suggestions as to a good place/way to Hunt South Dakota Pheasants?

I am a diehard MN pheasant chaser and chances are if you've hunted west of Hutchinson and east of Ortonville, you may have seen me and the pooch.

I have a hard time reserving a date/place to hunt 6 months early. I'm just looking for a recommendation for one of those "go by the seat of your pants trips". You know, decide wednesday that your going hunting friday and come home sunday. Any suggestions? or FYI's?

I REALLY LOVE TO WALK THE POOCH TOO! I NEVER HAVE HUNTED S.D. AND NOW WITH THE GOOFY REGS AND MORE $$$ I REALLY DON'T HAVE A DESIRE TO GO THERE.

I THINK YOU HAVE TO PRE-PICK YOUR HUNTING DATES OR SOME talk LIKE THAT....THEY CAN HAVE IT.

I MAY TRY IOWA THIS FALL. I'M GONNA HIT THE N.E. IOWA TROUT STREAMS THIS SPRING SO MAYBE I'LL GET SOME INFO.

MT,
The cost of a SD pheasant license is $100 for two 5 day periods. You pick your dates, but they can always be changed. A good place to start is the Mitchell area and north to Artesian, Woonsocket and Huron. There is a lot of public hunting in the area. My recomendation is to hunt late in the year. The best hunting is in late Nov. until the end. Especially if there is some snow on the ground. The first three weeks out there are very crowded. If you wanted to go the guided way, there are a lot of those in the area. Later in the year it is easier to get into them. They are very expensive, but you will get a lot of shooting in. If you do go that route, try to find a place with wild birds instead of pen raised. Pen raised birds are not that fun to shoot. They fly straight up in the air and land about 20 feet away if you miss. When you watch a hunting show sometime, watch how the pheasants get up and you will know what I mean. The $100 is steep, but is a small price to pay to get into some of the best pheasant hunting in the world. Good Luck

I was born and raised near Miller (40 miles west of Huron) I go back every year and it gets harder to find land to hunt. Being a former native it helps but with all the people willing to pay $100 a day or more to shoot 3 birds you know what the farmers are doing. I did go to a farmer last year who doesnt believe in abusing hunters. $30 a day with a farmhouse to stay and land to hunt which is really cheap. I know of another who wants $60 a day still reasonable and has considerably more land. Miller area has over 3000 acres of state land with lots of birds and lots of hunters the first several weeks. I hope this is helpful. If you want to chat email me at [email protected]
