What's up first

What is the first edible you look for in the spring? Seems like in the past, the first thing I come across is ramps. Is there something I might be missing out on?

Fiddleheads are just around the corner. I checked a few of my spots earlier this weekend, and it won't be long now.

For mushrooms, it's usually oysters and morels.

Thank you Mr Stick. I thought nobody wanted to answer because of my picture. They were scared a big guy like me would eat out the whole forest. That's profiling and just not right. It would, I have to admit, be harsh, but fair though. Never tried fiddle heads, but I am looking forward to some fresh mushrooms.

I'm generally looking for Fiddleheads (or I will be) Ramps are the first I've found, with Oysters right around that time as well.

No worries, Cicada. Give the fiddleheads a try...they're one of my favorite wild edibles. Just make sure you prepare them properly. If you do find some, do a quick search on youtube for cooking instructions. Super easy, but you gotta make sure you get the tannins out of them before you eat them.

And if you do find a bunch, don't harvest all of them, as they'll regrow year after year if you don't overharvest them. Last year someone hit one of "my" spots and picked every single fiddlehead in the area.
