reel advice

I was going to go and buy a reel sometime this week and was wondering if you guys could give me any advice on what is a good medium to shallow crankbait reel. Also what types of lines are good to use for certain conditions. Anything would greatly appreciated.

I love a Curado for cranks. They cast smaller baits (down to 3/8) very well.

12-15 mono with a rod that has a middle of the road backbone or a small diamter braid with a rod with a softer backbone.

The braid (due to bouancy) will effect your depth, so take that into consideration when choosing your crank.

i would definately recommend the Shimano reels! Curados are awesome. they make a low gear ratio reel (3.8:1) that works great for cranking. i use Trilene Sensation 12 lb. on my cranking reel and so far have really liked it.

For maximum depth on cranks use a Flourocarbon line, like Vanish 10lb. or 12lb. Flourocarbon sinks and is typically thinner than a mono equivalent, thus helping your cranks dive deeper. Or you can use a thin diameter braid, like 10lb. Fireline, Power Pro, whatever you choose. By choosing an ultra-thin braid (stick to 10-15lb. test with a 2-4lb. diameter) you get less resistance from the line, again reducing friction and your crankbaits will diver deeper. But for general crankbaiting, I'd suggest 10lb. or 12lb. Sensation from Berkley; thin diameter, low stretch, and the line handles very well.

Good Luck!
