thefarmer
I have a hummingbird 998c HD si in my boat, was going to buy the transducer xi 9 20, looks like most features will work but wondering if anyone uses this setup. What settings do you use on the ice? Was thinking about putting it on a genz pack unless someone else has a better setup?
JoeMX1825
I believe those SI/DI units require movement to scan properly, therefor they will not function on the ice....
FshBloodRiverMud
Yessir. I used to use my 898 on a genz box. Now i use a 788. Didn't want to take my 898 off the boat this winter. That transducer will work. Obviously you need the HDSI duecer for SI.SInce i almost solely use my Birds for Charting; the 898 was excessive in weight and battery consumption which is why i got the 788. FshBloodRiverMud
I believe those SI/DI units require movement to scan properly, therefor they will not function on the ice.... Not true. I use mine when i'm anchored all the time in the summer; i have also used it while ice fishing too. When the transducer is NOT MOVING you can watch fish swim by. Stick it down an ice hole, note the direction of the duecer. Watch for fish swimming to the left or right. If nothing, turn duecer 90 degrees and monitor once again. If nothing, then move. Otherwise, walk in the direction that you marked fish and dril another hole. Found it to be rather cumbersome and i only did that once. A buddy of mine has converted his 360 to be ice ready; he's going to give me a try at that one of these days.

JoeMX1825
Thanks for the correction! I was led to believe if the SI ducer wasn't moving, you'd just be scanning the same sliver of water over and over again?Lowrance has a good multi-season application for some of their fish finders. I use an Elite-5 on the bow of my boat in the summer and then use it in "Ice mode" with a Lowrance Ice Pack in the winter months, works great! Much like any sonar that isn't moving, except it's a much wider sliver rather than a much narrower cone. It is still a fish finding tool, but less of a structure finding tool. Of course, with some practice, you can learn a lot about what the bottom content from just a sliver.
