Ice Fishing River Backwaters

Last Saturday my buddy and I iced a river backwater for the first time. We have fished it in the summer months but weren't sure of all the species in there, their population, depth, structure, etc. These unknowns were the reason we decided to ice this body of water. We wound up catching a lot of fish and 5 species on the day. The highlight came when I hooked into a Channel Cat that was roaming above a school of Crappies - my first Channel through the ice.

I've always wanted to do this, but I don't think I have anything near me that would qualify as good river backwater locations. Sounds like you had a good time.
