Axle sizes for wheelhouse?

From what I've noticed most people are using a 1 1/2" solid shaft for axle pivot. Does this sound about right or is there a better or different size? Is there a certain hardness or type of shaft?

Im running 1 1/4" 1144 also called "stress proof". Its harder than a standard cold roll which is 1018. The hardest round thats still readily available is 4140. 4140 is much harder to drill and machine.
