Fishing opener?

you are correct, the walleye & northern pike opener is this weekend and bass doesn't open up until the end of the month.

Although you know this happens every year, there will be guys out on tonka, white bear, prior, etc... fishing for "northerns" when you know they are really hunting for spawning bass. Kinda frustrating how MN DNR sets up it's regs regarding season openers because a lot of bass can be picked up fishing for northerns - whether you are being intentional about it or not is another question...

The opener for bass is on the 29th, unless you fish up north of duluth, north and east of hiway 53 from duluth to international falls. this is one of the good things about living in duluth!

BigMike, the question I have is how do you fish for Pike? The only Pike I've caught since I've lived here were on either Spinnerbaits and Crankbaits. The biggest Pike I've seen caught was on the Mississippi River (12lbs) using a white spinnerbait.

You know I've been an outspoken proponent to smallie conservation, but I don't see how you could fish for Pike without catching Bass. I'm dying to get out and cast a line, but I don't want to be thought of a poacher or cheater. I guess if I do go in the next two weeks, I'll use 3/4 oz spinnerbaits. Maybe this will keep the smallies from biting???

BigMike,
I dont think you caught my question right. I was saying that the only meaningfull opener is the Bass opener. The walleyes and northerns mean nothing to me. Even though I will be putting my waders on at about 11:45 friday night. friendly

Friendly,
I catch your drift now... I'm right there with you. The real opener isn't until the 29th grin.gif. I grew up in CA where there is no such thing a northern or walleyes, so fishing in the midwest has been a challenge keeping those "other" pesky fish off, especially those spinnerbaits & cranks.

Hawgtide,
I agree with you about the spinnerbaits and cranks, I've caught almost as many pike on them while fishing the 'sippi & rum as I have caught bass. Up here, pike really seem to love those spinnerbaits! Which makes me wonder about this whole pike opener being a couple weeks before bass opener. It would seem to me that it would be just too hard to distinguish between the two: fishing for bass or pike with spinnerbaits. Although I don't know if I would want to be throwing spinenrbaits all day in order look like I'm fishing for pike. If I "accidently" caught a bass I would wank to pull out a senko, tube, or jig of some sort and work the area a little more thoroughly.

I guess it's all a mindset - some will actually be fishing for pike and some will be fishing for bass but masked as pike fishermen.

But when in doubt, head to Pool 2 and 4 and get your bass on until opener grin.gif

I think I'm just too much of a goody goody when it comes to this whole topic and would rather play it safe than risk getting a big ticket - or even worse lose my gear.

I'm interested if anyone on FM has ever got a ticket from a CO. If so, for what and how much? Especially if it was about this particular topic.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
