Humminbird Screen stays blank?

mr_jman

Question

I've got a Humminbird 899 Side Imaging unit. It worked great this past weekend and for about 2 hours yesterday, then out of nowhere the screen went blank but the orange backlight behind the buttons continued to work. I came home and recharged the battery and tried it again tonight with the same result... Any thoughts on what is going on?

Also wanted to add that once I "turn it on" and the orange back lights come up, I can't turn them back off no matter how long I hold down the power button.

I had a similar problem where mine (859) didn't come on but the buttons lit up. I brought it to another store to see if it would come on and it didn't. Associate at the store said he had similar problem and the mother board ended up being replaced. So I sent my unit to HB last week and awaiting to hear back from them. My unit is still under warranty.

Are you SURE your battery is good? Check battery voltage with a multimeter. Then check it at the connector end of the cable to the bird. If it's less than 11.5 volts, that could be the problem. Otherwise, sounds like a catastrophic failure of the bird. Hope it's under warranty.

I think it has a one year warranty so I am good there. I tried it with a second battery and same issue. Emailed humminbird and got a few "try this" tips but I think she may just have given up. I'll have to call them and send it to them for repair/replacement.
