I use five foot, 8 foot 6 inch and 12 foot rods depending on what configuration I am using/how many people are in the boat. Each one has it's place for me. If you're just starting out something around ten foot will give you a pretty good spread.

I see there are several choices on the market, have you picked up one of the Scheels rods and if so how did they feel ? There aren't any shops that carry these rods around me so I can't go check them out. And are the 5' rods like a pool cue or is there some action in them ?

The Walleye Angler Series rods from Bass Pro are top notch as well. Parsons and Kavajecz put those together. The 5 foot shorty rods from Scheels are really good too. Top them off with a Tekota 600 LC reel by Shimano and your will be set for years to come.

Thanks guys, I did get the 10'6" Scheels rods and tried them out the other night, I like them , 5's are next. I put Cabela's Depth MasterII 20's on them , that reel holds 10 colors of 12 pound Sufix perfectly.
