or old?? have not seen one for a while. this one showed up a bit ago and I had to sneak the patio door open and slowly put the camera out and use my left eye. LOL

Surely does look like an immature bird doesn't it? We have quite a few of them around here and I confess it is not common to see the young birds at all. They seem to come and go. Saved one when a feral cat had leaped up out of nowhere and grabbed it off our deck. I was able to jump up and whack the cat and get the bird under control. In a few minutes it was able to fly away. And it did not even peck me like the seagull I rescued one day did! Those babies can give you a MEAN peck. Frankly, I don't think I'd want to be pecked by an angry Pileated woodpecker!! OUCH!
