MinnKota Powerdrive taking "Time-outs"

jmg

Question

Was fishing with my brother yesterday. He has a 6 yr. old bow mount 50 or 55LB 12 volt Minnkota. It was running fine and then all of a sudden just quit. He thought maybe the circuit breaker kicked in due to weeds. Cleared the weeds(not many weeds on it) and hit the reset and it worked for a short time and did this same thing a few more times and then did not want to restart so we left it. Had a brand new Interstate, fully charged battery for it. Any ideas? Could the reset device be defective? Oh yeah, he said the power cord for the motor that plugs into the receptacle on the boat seemed unusually hot when this would happen. Could a crack in that wire cable do that? Neither of us is an electrician or electrical technician or engineer so I told him I would ask those in the know on HSO, since somebody usually has the answer. Thanks for any input.

The wires being hot is a concern to me. Take the prop off and make sure there isn't any line wrapped around it. Otherwise take the side panels off the motor and make sure all connections are tight. Where the power cord connects inside tends to be a trouble spot and I had issues with that on a 65#. Never had the motor overheat just would shut off for no reason. I would wiggke the power cable and it took off.

As mentioned, defiantly a bad connection and/or a breaker.

Just because something looks good doesn't mean it is. Take apart, clean and re-tighten all of the cables off the battery and replace the breakers.
