Electrical problem??

Recommended Posts

I have a 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 1500HD and the doors were locking by themselves but now it has got to the point that they will lock and unlock after I shut the door and it even has started doing it in the middle of the night with the lights flashing and the horn going off. It has also starting doing it while I am driving. I just cleaned the grounds by the front bumper and behind the front wheel on the drivers side. Still locked by itself! It does have a Astrostart installed. Is it possible this was not installed correctly?? Also the alternator gauge will be reading like 19 volts sometimes and I replaced it back in May while on vacation thinking it was bad and I didn't want to get stuck along side the road.

May not be your issue but my daughter had a similar problem and after some checking I found that her remote fob was bad and would activate randomly. Aside from that, I would disable the auto start by removing the fuse and see if the problem is still there.

I have run into the same thing on corvettes with the fob. It's pretty easy to use a TPMS scanner to see if the fob is transmitting signals when it should be. The other thing you can do is leave the fob at home and go for a drive around the block. If the problem goes away and turns with the fob you solved the issue.

It could also be the ecm for the door locks and such in the truck that could be causing this?

If you goggle this, you will find many threads on this issue with Chevy trucks.

My solution is to have a spare key hidden outside the truck. I never leave my keys in the truck.

I tried to turn of the delay on the steering wheel in the computer that also did not help.

Fuse block loose and many other possible issues. I have 2 fobs and tried each one, put in new batteries and nothing helped there either.

I had it checked by a dealer and they said it was in the ecm but for the money to possibly repair it, I just carry an extra key and have for the past 2 years. Might not be the correct fix but it works.

I thought it was a ground issue as it would go on and off while driving or just parked in the drive then it would not do it for 3-4 months. I turned the horn o0ff in the steering wheel for the door locks so I did not have to listen to that when it decided to do what it does.

After I played with the setting in the steering wheel long enough, I got it to stop the locks from going on and off by themselves so I figure I may have solved the issue by turning some options off totally.

I removed the batteries from the fob so that's not a issue. I did however took the panel below the steering wheel off and found a half azzed ground screw that was doing basically nothing. Everything went crazy when I removed the old screw. By the looks of it whoever installed the remote start didn't give a dump! I reinstalled the ground wire and it seemed to work for now.
