boat trailer repair

kevfish1

Question

My tires on my boat trailer have been wearing very poorly to the point I have had to put new ones on every year for the past 3 years. Where is a good place to have the trailer worked on to resolve this. I live in southwest mn but realize I may have ro drive a few hours to get fixed

Is 1/4 inch enough to cause this severe tire wear on the inner side? And if it is should I just get a new axel?

Absolutely! 1/4 toe out is a lot, especially on a trailer that has no steering and only follows.

What you describe is "toe out" and would cause exactly the wear you are experiencing. Whether you replace it or not depends on the condition of the axle tube itself. If it is rusted bad and weakened replacement is the best option. If it is structurally sound it could be straightened, but the cost may be similar to a new one.

On our semi trailers we only tolerate 1/8" but they have tandem axles and duel tires.
