Trolling Motor Won't Spin Anymore

drewbop

Question

Transom mounted trolling motor doesn't work anymore. Worked last summer, but sometimes I would need to push the blade to get it to start spinning. I have a feeling something might be burned out?

I know I have power to the motor itself. Just seeing where I should begin trouble shooting!

Well as you can see I had a bit of water in the trolling motor-and it hasn't seen the water for almost a year!

I took everything apart and cleaned it up well. I am planning on buying some replacement seals when putting it back together. Does anyone have an opinion if it will still run? Like I said, it ran last year as long as I started the blade with my hand. I'm hoping a good cleaning, some grease and new seals will bring her back to life.

Well I received my seals and brush kit yesterday. I replaced the brushes, put in all new seals, got everything put together and the thing would only run on the top 3 speeds! Well, turns out I had tightened the prop nut a little too tight, loosened her up and she runs like a charm.

I'm confident I probably could have just let everything dry out, clean it up and grease it and it would have ran still. But since I had it that far apart, might as well replace a few things as well. Pretty easy job! Cheap fix too

Well my I pilot stopped the other day out on the water and I could not figure it out... the power was on and it turned the head but the prop would not engage... I was FRUSTRATED to say the least. So like a kid with a broken toy I started pushing every button on the controller and when i hit the "pause" button the motor kicked in... more than a little red faced I now think I might spend soem time looking at my manual again... I blamed it on too much time int he sun...

I go to a lot of yard sales during the summer up in the Brainerd lakes area when at our camper when it is to craapy to fish. You cannot believe how many trolling motors are being sold. My thought is to never buy one as if it still worked, it would still be on the boat! Looks like a pretty common problem wink
