Wirenut
Looking for likes and dislikes from owners of this motor in the F150.Would you current owners buy this motor again in your truck or go with the 5.0?Started looking at 2012-2013 supercrews with the 6.5 foot box and most of them have the EcoBoost motor, what's surprising to me is the amount of trucks that have less than 10,000 miles on them and were not lease vehicles, did they buy them and have problems with the motor? I guess I'm wondering if all the bugs are worked out of them? I pull a 18' Alumacraft.
BartmanMN
I love mine. 2013 Supercrew Eco with 3.55 rear end and the small box. I pull a Crestliner Sportfish 1850.2 years ago my GMC Sierra struggled on the hills going to Vermilion. Last year my Eco Boost had no issues at all. My neighbor pulls an enclosed work trailer and had the 5.0 and he got rid of it after 1 year to get the Ecoboost instead. He said his 5.0 was terrible at towing that trailer. He loves his ecoboost. Wirenut
BartmanMN Do you run premium fuel in yours or regular 87 octane, I have read they get the numbers Ford advertises with premium fuel only, have you found that to be true?
BartmanMN
I've only ran 87 octane. Never tried premium. My local pumps stop at $100 so I try to maximize the numbers of gallons with that.
Schubie
I have owned both the 5.0 and the Eco. I think the 5.0 was fine pulling a 18 ft glastron or a 33 foot travel trailer. 7 or 8 mpg. Pulling trailer. I now have the Eco and it is a blast to drive but even when not pushing the pedal I think I get the same mpg as the 5.0 not pulling. 15 -16 in town and highway mix. I have not pulled a thing with it yet. Schubie
HNTNBUX
I have a 2013 Ford Super Crew shortbox with the Eco Boost and 355 gears. I tow a 17 foot Lund Explorer and a 19 foot enclosed aluminum snowmobile trailer. When pulling the boat at about 65-70 mph I get about 15 mpg. When pulling the snowmobile trailer with two sleds and fishouses or two sportsmans I lockout 6th gear at about 60-65 mph and get between 11-12 mpg. The torqe and power is amazing for a non diesel engine. I have about 30000 miles and would certainly buy this truck again. The only thing I am considering is adding airbags to my rear suspension for towing the snowmobile trailer. I have only run 87 octane fuel. Lip_Ripper Guy
I'm at about 87k on my 2011 with the short box. My next truck will for sure have the 6.5' box. There don't seem to be any widespread problems with these other than an intercooler issue, which I think has been resolved. I have had zero problems with anything...knock on wood.My opinion (I realize this is a dangerous statement to make on a message board) is that this is the best gas motor available in a half ton. As long as you don't drive like you stole it, you can get in the low 20s for mileage empty, 15-18 towing a boat, and have plenty of power to tow anything you'd want to put behind a half ton. The torque curve is the best out there. Realize that it takes gas to make power, so if you are constantly listening to the turbos scream, or towing heavy, you are gonna burn gas. I get 8-10 mpg towing my fish house.
Powerstroke
I absolutely love mine. 2012 Crewcab 6.5' box with max tow. I've got 1250 miles pulling my 5000 lb camper. Power is awesome, truck tows great and tons of room in the cab. I've got 22,000 miles on the truck without a problem. I have studied the mileage numbers based on fuel octane and yes the fuel does matter. 87 octane: up to 17.3 mpg89 octane: 17.6-18.4 mpg General increase of about 5%91 octane: 18.6-19.7 mpg Increase of ~10% over 87oct.So, for all you people who might freak out over the increased cost of premium, you just need to do a little more math. This weekend I had to fill up. Regular was $3.49, $3.65 for mid and $3.81 for premium. So, if mid grade is $3.65, but offers a fuel savings of 5%, then the value of the fuel is $3.47, or a savings of 2 cents per gallon for using a higher octane. Premium offers a MPG increase of 10%. A 10% price difference is $3.43 or a savings of 6 cents per gallon. So, as long as the value ratio works out, using the higher octane actually yields overall cost savings by you getting more miles per tank for less money.Sorry if thats hard to read, but I've got all of this information in a spreadsheet and hand calculated mileage numbers. I was surprised too, but I'm glad it works out. My last fill up with the large fuel tank was 30.75 gallons and I drove 603 miles, on ONE tank of gas.Would I buy an ecoboost again? I have one EB truck, an EB SUV and I rely on one in my work vehicle. I'd buy one again in a heartbeat.
Powerstroke
Also, someone tell Bartmann if he puts his card in again he can fill up full instead of stopping at $100.00. Someone of those stations make it hard on vehicles with a big tank.

Someone of those stations make it hard on vehicles with a big tank. Yeah, Yeah. Wife budgets for 100 per fill, so that is where I stop. 9 times out of 10, that is $95 of gas and a car wash. lindy rig
I like mine. Plenty of power. Pulled my buddies 21' Proline (fiberglass with a cuddy). He was surprised how well it pulled compared to the V8.
