Catfishing newbie. Henderson area

Sandy Bottom

Recommended Posts

I'm new to catfishing. I've got my gear ready to go but where and when does a guy go? Are they biting now or is the water to cold? Any bait tips would also be greatly appreciated!

Any help or tips for helping a newbie would be helpful and appreciated!

Channel cats are biting, the water is still a little cold for flatheads. Once the water gets into the mid fifties, the flatheads will be feeding.

Channel cats I would be using cut bait, then once the water warms up a bit, switch to live bait for flats. As for where, in general, channels, look for a current seam, fish close to current. Flatheads, look for structure, or a tight current seam. Once the water warms, watch for bait fish, flats are predators, if you see bait, that is their food.

If your looking for flatheads, might as well wait till the water temp reaches 50 degree's, they are pretty dormant till above 50 degrees. A nice plump bullhead will work along with suckers. Cut bait can get the job done but I typically use live bait.

if your looking for channels, I would guess fairly soon and they should start to go.

When the water warms up for the flat's, if you would like to go along in my boat one evening for flats, just let me know. I am not the pro some are but I do seem to do ok on the flat's. You could meet me at the Henderson landing. I typically start about 2 hours befor sunset and fish till whenever. Around sunset things seem to liven up a bit.

I will also at times fish for walleyes the first hour and then go after the flats or do channels and then flat's.

I am sure I can get you pointed in the right direction.

Thanks for the information, greatly appreciated! Now hopefully I can put it to good use and catch some cats.

Thanks for the offer Harvey Lee, will let you know when it warms up some.

Does anyone know what the current river temp is or if there is a HSOforum to find the river temp?
