New trolling motor batteries, low

Fish Head

Question

I just purchased 2 Interstate Pro trolling motor batteries over the weekend. When I installed them in the boat and plugged in the charger, I noticed only the red light was on the charger indicating they are pretty low on charge.

I disconnected them from the onboard charger and individually plugged them in to a portable charger. The portable charger indicated there was only about a 35% charge on each of them. Is that normal for a new battery? Don't they usually come with close to a full charge?

Depending on how long they sat around on the retail/dealer floor, they could have lost some of the charge. However 35% is dangerously low for a lead acid battery, you usually don't want them discharging below 50%. What was the voltage on them? I'd just charge them, and if they hold a charge use them ASAP, to test how they hold a charge and recharge (plus it's an excuse to get out on the water!). If there are any issues I'd bring them back to the dealer or talk to Interstate. The good news is their corporate headquarters is in Bloomington, so it's an easy drive.

Could just be low from sitting on the shelf too long, give them a charge and see what happens. Also if you have access to a load tester, test them. It's a better way to check a battery then using a volt meter. Worse case the batteries should be under warranty.
