I believe the manual calls for 10w-30 or 5w-30 in colder weather. Why would you want a 40wt? I'd bet you get shut down from the low oil sensor a couple times at least when starting from cold. In really cold weather even a 5w-30 can trip the low oil sensor once or twice from a cold start until things get moving good.

I'm running 5w-30 syn in mine.

I have the Yamaha. Recommended oil is 10w40.

This year when I changed oil I found a bunch of synthetic 5w20 from my old truck. At $9/quart, I didn't want to throw it away. Started using it in the generator and it runs and starts better than ever. I used to have to keep it at about 1/2 choke when it was cold. Now it runs like a champ. Your mileage may vary.
