hoggsback
I have an old Strikemaster Electra auger that I run off my truck battery when using. I am looking at making it into more like the current electric augers with a small battery attached to the handle. I have a 12v flasher style battery that's 7.5ah. I see the strikemaster replacement battery is 9ah. Other then this difference, is there any reason I couldn't run this auger off a small flasher battery? Surface Tension
12 volt is 12 volt, the amp hr rating is storage capacity.Biggest concern is be sure your connections to the battery are tight fitting or else you'll create a lot of heat there. Your not going to get a lot holes from that size battery but you could connect two 12 volt batteries in parallel to increase drill time. ORGMaster
To me the wire size will say it all. The auger pictured has at least 8 gauge stranded wire on it. Even without knowing the auger's current draw at 12 volts DC, the wire size tells me it is between 50 and 80 amps if the wire is under 10' long.If this is true you would not have enough amp storage in a 9ah battery to drill one hole.Just try clamping the auger to the battery you have and give it a go.BTW.... That is one clean electric auger. I used and loved mine for years before it grew legs.
fishwater
I'd look into building slightly higher voltage rechargeable battery. I'd bet it would turn faster and would pull less current to do so. If you need any help, shoot me a PM.
hoggsback
I connected it to the battery and nothing. I can't find any info on this auger online so I don't know specifics about the motor. The wire is heavy, similar to jumper cables for a car. I guess I'll keep using my truck or deep cycle battery. I'll shoot you a PM fishwater for more on your idea.
